Shona exhibits at Tauranga Art Gallery
As fans and followers alike are aware, Shonas stunning work is as much art, as fashion. With impeccable detail and precision the sculptural geometric forms of the garments combine with natural and organic lines and flow. It was only fitting that her garments be displayed at the Tauranga Art Gallery during May 2015. The art gallery press release is as follows:
We are excited to host Te Whare Tawhiao, a special exhibition by award-winning Maori artist and fashion designer Shona Tawhiao.
Shona, who is originally from Tauranga has created a local and international profile for traditional and contemporary mahi raranga (flax weaving). Her work has showed in Paris, London and Melbourne and her garments have been on the runway during New Zealand, Melbourne and London Fashion Weeks.
Her uniquely designed garments are created combining modern materials and native flax (Harakeke), made with matching accessories such as hats and shoes. Unlike most other designers, Shona mixes traditional Maori weaving skills with her eye for contemporary design. Te Whare Tawhiao will show seven of Shona’s garments, and opens together with Uke Rere at the Gallery on May 15
